Proof that “being nice” is good for you

Volunteers know this. People in the healthcare profession know this. Everyone knows this… the simple fact that when you are nice to someone, you feel good. Sound selfish? Who cares. It’s true.

Real-world proof: Of course I can’t remember the exact study, but I read this a while ago. It stated that when you do something nice for someone, your seratonin levels increase. (Seratonin causes positive thoughts.) The person you helped has their seratonin levels increase. And here’s the best part. People who see “the act” have their seratonin levels rise as well.   Suggestions on  what to do:

1. Help people carry bags.

2. Pick up garbage.

3. Smile and say hello to people. 4. When driving, let people change lanes in front of you.

5. Hold doors for others.

6. Pay a toll for the car behind you.

7. Give up your seat on a crowded bus.
